Hi there!¶

We met at Amazing North, 2026 or Vectorama, 2026 - this guide is to help you take VR home with you!

Frugal VR is a project at the University of Oulu that turns any smartphone into a virtual reality headset using a simple cardboard viewer. No expensive hardware needed — just three things:

A smartphone (Android)
A cardboard VR viewer
One of the VR games our students created (you can find links below)

All the games on this page were built by students at the University of Oulu and are free to download.

1. Get a Cardboard Viewer¶

If you didn't take one home from our booth, you can buy one online. We recommend the Durovis Dive Cardboard 6:

Any Cardboard–style viewer with 34 mm lenses will also work. Search for "VR Cardboard Viewer" on Amazon, Verkkokauppa, or other retailers.

2. Install a Game (APK)¶

Pick any game below and tap the download link on your Android phone. (iPhone users — please see the note at the bottom.)

How do I install an APK file?¶

Tap the download link above on your Android phone.
When the download finishes, open the file (or check your Downloads folder).
Android will ask if you want to allow installation from this source — tap Settings → Allow from this source.
Tap Install. The game will appear in your app drawer.

If you see a "Play Protect" warning, that's normal for apps not installed from the Play Store. Tap "Install anyway" — these games come from University of Oulu students.

3. Calibrate Your Cardboard¶

⚠️ Don't skip this step!

The games will look blurry, doubled, which will feel uncomfortable if you don't calibrate your phone first.

4. Enable 120Hz for smoother VR¶

⚠️ This step is equally important!

VR feels best at high refresh rates. To get the smoothest head tracking, do all three of the following on Android:

Step 1: Enable Developer mode¶

Go to Settings → About phone → Software information.
Tap Build number 7 times. You'll see a message saying developer mode has been enabled.

Step 2: Disable the default frame rate cap¶

Go to Settings → Developer options.
Turn ON Disable default frame rate for games (this lets games run faster than 60 Hz).
Optionally also turn ON Show refresh rate if you want to see the live FPS counter on screen.
On some phones you need to additionally force the high frame rate: Settings → Developer options → Force peak refresh rate.

Step 3: Set Motion smoothness to High¶

Go to Settings → Display → Motion smoothness.
Select High (120 Hz). Tap Apply.

Note: 120Hz uses more battery. If your phone is getting hot or running low on battery, switch back to Standard (60Hz).

5. Slide In, Look Around, Enjoy!¶

Slide your phone into the cardboard, hold it up to your face, and look around. The games respond to where you look — no controllers needed.

Tips for the best experience¶

Turn your phone brightness all the way up.
Enable Do Not Disturb so notifications don't break immersion.
Make sure you have at least 30% battery — VR uses more power than usual.
Sit down for your first session — moving around in VR can feel strange at first.

6. Troubleshooting¶

The image is blurry or I see double¶

You probably skipped calibration (Step 3) or your phone is sliding around inside the cardboard. Re-calibrate, and/or make sure the phone is centered.

The game crashes when I open it¶

Make sure your Android version is 8.0 or newer, and that you have at least 1 GB of free storage. Try restarting your phone and reopening the app.

The screen rotation is wrong¶

Enable auto-rotate in your phone's quick settings. The game needs landscape mode to work in VR.

My head movements feel laggy¶

You probably haven't enabled 120Hz yet (see Step 4: Advanced — Enable 120Hz for smoother VR). Also try closing other apps running in the background.

I have an iPhone — does this work?¶

All of the games above are Android-only. We're working on iOS versions. Check back soon, or contact us below.

7. For Parents¶

Most manufacturers and pediatric experts recommend VR only for children aged 10–13 and older. All children using VR should be supervised. Sessions should be limited to 10–20 minutes depending on age, with at least 30-minute breaks in between.

If your child feels dizzy or nauseous, stop and rest. This is normal at first and goes away with practice.
Use VR seated when possible. Make sure there are no obstacles within arm's reach.
All games on this page are free, made by University of Oulu students, and contain no ads or in-app purchases.
